What is wire sawing?

Wire sawing is a concrete cutting technique that’s often used to cut large sections of concrete, such as walls, pipes, bridges and other thick or load-bearing concrete structures.

A diamond wire saw utilises a high-tensile cable made of metal or wire, embedded at regular intervals with synthetic diamond segments that wit within steel rings or beads. With wire sawing, the cut itself is created by the diamonds.

The wire is threaded through a system of pulleys, which are rigged to align the wire and enable it to cut in the desired direction. Once the wires are wrapped around the cutting object and the saw is turned on, the pulleys spring into action, pulling the wire through the concrete and maintaining tensile pressure to produce a precise cut.

What is wire sawing used for?

Concrete wire sawing is often the go-to method for cutting large areas of thick concrete, such as concrete walls or pipes, large pillars or barriers, load-bearing objects and bridges.

Common applications of wire sawing include:

  • Concrete walls
  • Large concrete pipes
  • Load-bearing concrete structures
  • Concrete pillars
  • Thick concrete structures in piers, dams, power stations and manufacturing plants
  • Heavily-reinforced concrete, e.g. bridge sections, machine bases and

Benefits of wall sawing

Incredibly flexible, extremely versatile, and reassuringly cost-effective, wire sawing comes with a huge range of benefits for a wide variety of sites, structures and situations.

Here are some of the great advantages of wire sawing:

  • High level of precision and accuracy: With its smooth, clean finish and precise cutting ability, wire sawing is a great choice for achieving smooth edges that won’t require any further surface preparation after the cutting is complete.
  • Cut in any direction: With a wire saw, you can cut along floors, walls, or inverted surfaces with ease. Plus, wire sawing can achieve practically any shape or size you desire - even circular!
  • Cut through practically any material: Wire sawing can tackle virtually any type of surface, including thick or heavily reinforced concrete and solid steel structures such as concrete-encased steel pipes.
  • Ideal for underwater cutting: If you need concrete cutting at an underwater site, wire sawing is the solution. It’s also a great option for restricted sites, hard-to-access areas or very large structures.
